The Congressional Medal of Honor, sometimes known simply as the Medal of Honor was created by Congress in the Civil War to reward soldiers and others to recognize their service during the war. In the 150 years or so since the Medal of Honor was created, a great amount of lore, mystique and tradition has grown up around it. Since the Civil War, 3493 people have received medals.
