2016 is a reintegration year for Oregon’s military-connected families following roughly 1,200 Soldiers from Oregon’s Army National Guard returning from Afghanistan last year.
Operation Purple Camp: The Tsuga Community Commission has produced Operation Purple Camp in Oregon since 2008. Every year our staff come together to continually refine the curriculum and establish a proper place for this program (and statewide community) to continue growing. Oregon is predominately made up of military families associated with the Reserves and National Guard. Youth of these families face a more nuanced set of challenges. We go beyond the national curriculum and build a program that meets the unique needs of Oregon families. Our passion for carrying out the most excellent summer camp traditions help us foster social capital and increase the capacity of Oregon’s military family community. We want Oregon’s military-connected youth to be a healthy and integrated component of Oregon’s next generation.
Oregon Summer Star: As community reintegration becomes important post-deployment, the Tsuga Community Commission is proud to have developed and integrated Oregon Summer Star, a camp for all of Oregon’s military-connected youth regardless of their family’s deployment / service status. If you are no longer eligible for Operation Purple Camp and would like to stay connected to the camp community you helped build, we encourage you to stay involved and join us again this year for the full camp experience for only $250. As Oregonians move into the next decade together, Oregon Summer Star is the custom camp for our youth and teens, to share experiences related to their parent’s military service, belong to a special statewide community and develop individual skills for life after camp. If you supported a friend who had a parent deployed, thanks for your service too – Join us!
For those families who are no longer eligible for Operation Purple Camp but would like to stay connected to the Community they helped grow, please join us on a parallel track this year by registering for Oregon Summer Star at www.OregonSummerStar.info. 50% scholarships are available when registering beginning March 11th through May 22nd 2016.
A Combined Program: Operation Purple and Oregon Summer Star will be happening together this year at Camp Cascade in Lyons, Oregon. This is for sure the most beautiful camp venue we’ve run over the last 10 years. There will be morning environmental education field studies on the lake, at the river or in the forest. Afternoon recreations will include Swimming, Field Games, Hikes, Arts and Crafts, a Snack Shack and more. We’ll have the classic all-camp games like Capture the Flag and Counselor Hunt. Oregon’s National Guard will be involved in a military theme day where campers can learn more about what their parents do when they’re away overseas. Each evening there will be a full campfire program and two late night activities will include a night hike and an outdoor movie under the stars with popcorn (Youth camp) or an all-camp Dance (Teen camp). We turn off the technology for a full week and exercise interpersonal skills. Operation Purple is fun, safe and an important opportunity for young people to get to know themselves and the world around them.
Safe and Fun: The food at Camp Cascade is nutrition and tasty – better than what most consider even good camp food. Our staff are well trained and recruited from other programs – they’re very good at what they do. Many have been running Operation Purple in Oregon with Tsuga for many years. All of our staff are background checked and our nurse on site is credentialed.
