The Klineline Kids Fishing Derby IS CANCELLED
In response to the extension of Governor Inslee’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” measures the Klineline Kids Fishing Board of Directors has cancelled the 2020 kids fishing derby.
Postponing the derby is not an option. The water will be too warm to stock from June through August. I’ve consulted with hatchery staff and rescheduling for the September/October time frame would not be an option. The hatchery does not have enough space (i.e. water) to hold these fish through the summer. Additionally, the fish that are growing through for next year will not be to catchable size by then and they are already allocated per our anticipated planning for 2021.
In the next month or two all registrations will be moved to the dates of our 2021 derby April 9th and 10th. Fishers will maintain the day currently signed up for, Friday for special needs of any age and Saturday for ages 5 to 14. The hour currently registered will be brought over and confirmations sent.
Refunds will be available upon request.

The annual Klineline Kids Fishing event is “reel” fun and a great way to get kids “hooked” on having fun in the great outdoors. Registration is open now so be sure to “catch” your spot for this popular event.
The annual Klineline Kids Fishing will be held at Klineline Pond on May 1-2, 2020. Special Needs kids will experience fishing on Friday, May 1st, and kids ages 5 through 14 will fish on Saturday, May 2nd, 2020.
Over this two-day period each spring some 3,000 kids, their families and friends (about 10,000 persons in all) will gather at Salmon Creek Park/Klineline Pond to help children experience fishing, playing outside and learning about our natural environment and water safety. The Klineline Kids Fishing Derby is the largest event of its kind in the state of Washington.
Klineline Pond is stocked with thousands of trout to give kids the best chance possible of experiencing the “thrill of the catch”. All fishing gear and bait will be provided, and each child will have the chance to catch, clean and keep up to two fish. While there is no guarantee of a catch (but I personally have not seen a child leave empty-handed), all kids will get a Fishing Kids T-Shirt, and get to keep the rod and reel they fished with!
Kids are encouraged to visit and experience the many other hands-on activities and exhibits in the park, including an archery range and educational kiosks. Prizes are awarded for the largest and the smallest fish caught in each fishing session. Bicycles are awarded hourly by random drawing.
“We think our fishing event impacts the lives of the children we serve. We see it in their happy faces; we hear from children and parents that return a second year. We see success in increasing numbers of children that participate each year, as well as increasing numbers of volunteers and sponsors who contribute in some way to make this community event a success. In fact, some of our members have been volunteering here for the last 30 years!”, says Dan Vossen from Klineline Kids Fishing.
Presented by the Klineline Kids Fishing Nonprofit, the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife and Clark Public Utilities, this program is aimed at getting more kids involved in fishing and building a base for the future stewards of this resource2
