For 55 years, the Hazel Dell Parade of Bands has been a family tradition. Generations of band members, little leaguers, and community participants from all walks of life have shared in this iconic community event. This year’s Parade, set for Saturday, May 19, starting at 10:30 AM, celebrates that tradition, with the theme of “Farm, Fun, and Family Tradition.”
The organizers of the Parade, the Hazel Dell/Salmon Creek Business Association, were quick to point out that they alone could not take credit for this year’s theme. Piggy-backing (farm pun intended) on the huge celebration that is the Clark County Fair’s 150th Anniversary, the Hazel Dell Parade wanted to extend Summer’s Best Party into the third weekend in May.
As part of that effort, the Hazel Dell/Salmon Creek Business Association is proud to announce that this year’s Parade Grand Marshal’s are John and Mary Ann Morrison. The Morrison’s have been instrumental in the success of the Clark County Fair for years; from volunteering, to Board Membership, to most recently include John’s role as Fair Manager/CEO. John and Mary Ann exemplify all the goodness of the Fair, and the Association is honored to have them as our Grand Marshals.
According to Tony Ruestig, President of the Hazel Dell/Salmon Creek Business Association, and Business Development Officer at TwinStar Credit Union, “The 2018 Parade is gearing up to be one of our best yet. 28 bands, over 100 entries, and terrific Grand Marshal’s in John and Mary Ann Morrison. We’re expecting 15-20,000 people to visit our area on Parade Day. We hope that they will enjoy the Parade, and have a chance to grab something eat or drink, or maybe do a little shopping at some of the fantastic local merchants we have here in the Hazel Dell and Salmon Creek area. And, of course, we’re hoping for great weather,” he concluded.
Always held on the third Saturday of May, Armed Forces Day, the Hazel Dell Parade is one of the largest and most-popular parades in the Pacific NW. This year’s event will have 28 local school bands performing; plus dozens of other Parade floats and entries from local organizations, including clowns, animals, antique and custom cars, dancers, and – always a crowd favorite – the firetrucks.
This year also marks the return of a pre-Parade road race – the ‘Race to Remember’ will start at 10:15 on Parade Day and follow the Parade route. The approximately 2.2-mile fun run will offer medals and awards. More information can be found on the event Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1842015012499908/
You could also choose to start the day off early with a trip to Clark County Fire District 6 Station 61 (Hazel Dell Avenue) for the Lion’s Club annual Pancake Breakfast, served from 7:00 to 10:00 AM. Tickets are available at the event, $6.50 for adults, $5.50 for seniors and children (under 5 is free).
As usual, the Hazel Dell Parade starts promptly at 10:30 AM in front of the Fire Station.
