The Leatherneck Open Golf Classic charity tournament was established in 1996. In its first year, the tournament supported the Muscular Dystrophy Association and with the help of the extended Marine Corps family raised much needed monies for MDA. Since its inception, the charity golf tournament fundraiser has had a couple of name changes and has supported several different charities, but it has always been focused on giving back to the military community in the Greater Portland area.
This year, the Leatherneck Open Golf Classic is pleased to support two wonderful charities: the Semper Fi Fund and Homes for our Troops. The Semper Fi Fund, and its program America’s Fund, provide immediate financial assistance and lifetime support to post 9/11 wounded, critically ill and injured members of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, and their families, ensuring that they have the resources they need during their recovery and transition back to their communities. Since 2004, the Semper Fi Fund has issued more than 86,000 grants, totaling more than $102 million in assistance to over 13,300 of our heroes and their families.
Homes for our Troops builds specially adapted, mortgage-free homes nationwide for the most severely injured Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of these Veterans have sustained injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, and/or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). These homes restore some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed while defending our country, and enable them to focus on their family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives. Since 2004, over 90 percent of donations to Homes for Our Troops has gone to directly support Veterans. HFOT builds these homes where the Veteran chooses to live, and continues its relationship with the Veterans after home delivery to assist them with rebuilding their lives. This year, Sergeant Joshua Sweeney USMC, a Homes for our Troops beneficiary living in Hillsboro, will join us for the tournament. Follow this link to learn more about Josh Sweeney’s amazing story.
For 18 years running, Marine Corps Veterans, Families, and Friends from the Greater Portland area have hosted this annual charity fundraiser held in the September-October time-frame. The fundraiser has always been a golf event followed by a banquet and auction/raffle and is made possible by an all volunteer organization. We look forward to seeing you this year for what looks to be a great event.
