The Trust is excited to host the Vancouver Barracks Military Association’s 2023 military history talk series. Join us to find out more about Johnny Clem’s role in the Civil War.
John (Johnny) Lincoln Clem was arguably the youngest soldier to serve in the Civil War. In the course of his long career, he served at the Vancouver Barracks in the 1890s, before becoming the last Civil War veteran to retire from the United States Army. Part of his career was spent as an officer in the 24th Infantry, the Buffalo Soldiers, to which he was appointed in 1871 by President Grant.
