Brief info
James “Ron” Powers is serving as Chair of the Community Military Appreciation Committee (CMAC) in Vancouver, Washington. As a veteran, educator, and community leader, he is dedicated to honoring those who have served and to building partnerships between the military and the city of Vancouver.
Born in Georgia and raised in central Florida, Ron enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduating from high school. He served for 4 years during the Vietnam War-Era. After his military service, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration through the GI Bill. He later completed his MBA while employed by Kraft Foods.
Ron spent 32 years at Kraft Foods and Mondelēz International, working in sales, management, and account management. After retiring, he moved to higher education, bringing his leadership and business experience to the classroom.
For 12 years, Ron has been an Adjunct Professor of Business at Clark College, teaching management, professional selling, and leadership. He also taught evening classes at Larch Correctional Center to incarcerated students, calling the experience humbling and rewarding.
Ron is Faculty Advisor to the Clark College Student Veterans of America Club and received the Exceptional Faculty Award, the college’s top faculty honor, in September 2025.
Outside the college, Ron is active in community leadership. As Rotary Club of Vancouver Sergeant-at-Arms, he coordinates meetings, volunteers, and guest programs. Through CMAC, he helps organize events such as the Vietnam War “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans” Ceremony, the Memorial Day Remembrances, and the Veterans Day Open House.
Ron has been married to Paula for 47 years. They have three children and five grandchildren. They also have two step-grandchildren. His life and work continue to reflect a deep commitment to service, education, and community engagement.
