When the United States entered World War II, it was the first time since the War of 1812 that the United States feared a full-scale enemy invasion. Across the country, as military bases beefed up their security and war plans, so did civilian governments. In Portland, Oregon, the city developed and implemented a comprehensive plan to combat enemy attacks, as well as implementing the changes necessary at home to support the war effort abroad. These plans included the City of Vancouver.
The Historic Trust will once again host The Vancouver Chautauqua at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site and Providence Academy. The Vancouver Chautauqua is in its 3rd year and modeled after the iconic chautauquas popular in late 19th and early 20th century America and featured speakers, teachers, musicians, entertainers, and craftsmen together for the entertainment and education of the community.
Groups, individuals, and ensembles are encouraged to submit applications to be a part of this exciting and dynamic venture to share across generations and experiences. This year performances, workshops and exhibitions will be ticketed events. The Historic Trust will host a combination of ticketed and free events. The public is invited to create their own contributions to The Vancouver Chautauqua at no cost to participants. The application to participate can be found through the button below:

End your Independence Day with a BANG at Vancouver’s Fireworks Spectacular! Pack a snack and a blanket, come to the Fort, and stake out your spot to watch the biggest fireworks show in the region.
This year is all about a bigger, brighter, BOOM! With the City-wide ban on retail fireworks, Vancouver’s Fireworks Spectacular will allow the community to enjoy the tradition of Independence Day fireworks safely.
The fireworks show is on Wednesday, July 4, 2018 at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. The fireworks will launch at 10:05pm to a synchronized soundtrack.
In addition to the big fireworks show at 10:05 p.m., this year’s event will feature live music and a variety of other activities throughout the site, incldung tours of the Marshall House on Officers Row and the Providence Academy, living history demonstrations at the reconstructed Fort, activities at the Fort’s visitor’s center and more!
Food vendors will also located on site, or you can bring in your own food and beverages (no alcohol).
C-TRAN will run two free shuttles to the site from Fisher’s Landing Transit Center and the 99th Street Transit Center starting at 6 p.m.
Admission is free. Donations will be accepted from those who want to support next year’s Fireworks Spectacular, with a portion of all proceeds supporting the Lower Columbia Veterans Coalition, a collective made up of the Community Military Appreciation Coalition (CMAC), Vancouver Barracks Military Association (VBMA), Combat Veterans International Chapter 9 (CVI), Buffalo Soldiers – Moses Williams Pacific Northwest Chapter (Buffalo Soldiers), and Special Forces Association (SFA).
The best place to see the fireworks is Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. Fireworks will not be visible from Clark College, the Columbia River, or from Portland.
Gates open at 8 a.m., but suggested arrival time is 5 p.m. Security checks will be at all entrance gates.
Over the course of July 4th, several roads in downtown Vancouver and exits on I-5 will be closed to move traffic efficiently before and after Vancouver’s Fireworks Spectacular:
Closed all day
Closed starting 10am
Closed starting 6 pm
Closed starting 8 pm
Closed starting at 9 pm
Starting at 6pm, C-Tran will run two free shuttles to the event, one from Fisher’s Landing Transit Center and one from the 99th Street Transit Center, with return service after the firework show.
Note there will NOT be a shuttle from Vancouver Mall this year.
ADA parking is free onsite along 5th Street for those with a valid ADA permit. A reserved ADA viewing area will be available nearby. View the ADA Parking & Viewing Area Map.
There are no food vendors or beer garden at the event this year.
You can bring in food and drinks (no alcohol).
No BBQ or open flames are allowed on site.
There will be no live music this year, but there will be plenty of free and low-cost heritage activities to enjoy.
Tour The Marshall House on Officers Row and The Historic Trust’s Providence Academy, watch living history demonstrations at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site National Park Service’s reconstructed Fort, learn about the history of flight at Pearson Air Museum and pop-up shop, or check out the gift shop, bookstore, historic art, rotating exhibits, and theater at the NPS Visitor Center.
Changes in retail fireworks laws have led to reduced funding for the Independence Day event that heavily relied on firework sales for support.
After conducting an assessment in collaboration with the City of Vancouver and the National Park Service, and reviewing feedback from participant surveys, The Trust recognized that the fireworks show is the element most valued by the community. We’re focusing on that–giving our audience what they want most.
Visitors who come during the day are encouraged to explore the history attractions at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site including The Marshall House, Providence Academy, The Fort, Pearson Air Museum, and The Fort Vancouver National Historic Site Visitor Center.
You may bring blankets and chairs to comfortably enjoy the fireworks show. No hammocks. Small canopies and tents are allowed. Do not drive stakes into the ground. All canopies and tents must be taken down by sundown to not block others’ view of the fireworks.
No pets are allowed inside the gates at Vancouver’s Fireworks Spectacular. Service animals welcome.

The Molly Thompson Memorial Fund is a local fundraising organization established In memory of Molly Michelle Thompson, a four-year-old girl from Tigard Oregon who battled a terminal liver cancer for two years. During her four years of life, Through her spontaneity, acceptance and love for life, Molly taught those around her to laugh through sorrow, play through fear and live through pain. Molly gracefully died on October 4, 1998. It is in the spirit of her life and death that her family & friends have continued Miles from Molly so that other children, like her, will be able to laugh and play through their tough times.
On October 4th, 1998, Molly led what would be our final talk together before she closed her eyes for the last time. As we cradled her in our arms, Molly whispered words that would become the driving force behind her legacy…
You could ask a hundred families what it’s like to be hospitalized with your child and you would get a hundred answers. But if you ask the kids, they will tell you it’s not that bad. “There’s movie night in a real theatre with real popcorn”, “prizes at bingo”, “we get to play outside in the garden” “we make tons of art”, “we sing and dance” “we have friends here” “and we party”!
It’s that same spirit that guided Molly every day. Her hospital friends were her favorite part of cancer. Kids that understood medical terminology, and that IV poles not only held medicine, but were a means for transportation. Kids that were just like her. Bald. Brave. Beautiful.
In continuing Molly’s legacy of love and laughter, we raise critical funds for The Child Life program at Randall Children’s Hospital.
